Remote Work?

Leaving work with my banker's box full of all my personal effects after my last day in the office.

Remote Work?

The 2nd question our family asked us when we told them our plans (after “Why?”) was “So your work is okay with you working remotely then?”

And I would chuckle and say, “I hope so!”

The reality is I didn’t tell anyone at my work until almost a month after we had purchased the trailer. I wanted to tell them, and I wanted to work something out with them to work not just remotely, but part-time as well.  But I knew I had to be “pot committed” otherwise it wouldn’t go well or I’d chicken out. And also just in case we ended up changing our minds.

My naive self thought that surely it would be easy to just transition from the VP of Asset Management to a part-time, flexible schedule, remote ad hoc helper. Hahaha. My bosses were totally understanding and super supportive when I told them, but they also have a business to run and couldn’t commit to keeping me on in any capacity until they figured out how to backfill my position. So I had to formally resign, and that was the hardest thing I’ve had to do. Literally. I cried for an hour while typing up my resignation. I’ve worked at Woodside Health for 8 years, my first and only company out of college. The work is fun and engaging and the people are awesome, some of my closest friends. I miss the in-office camaraderie and playing basketball or pickleball with them each week.

I worked the next 3 months doing my normal job, plus helping reorganize/reallocate my duties around, and training my replacement and my right-hand man so the transition would be as smooth as possible.

Near the end of my time in the office, I was pleasantly surprised to be offered a part-time, remote position! It was exactly what I had hoped for and wanted; just needed to take the long way around to get there :)

Update (May 5th): On my first day of part-time remote working, I helped close an investor loan to refinance one of our properties while we were at the Ark Encounter, so something's working right!
