61st Stop - Deming, NM

Stay: October 22, 2025

We pulled into our next Harvest Host, Mountain View Acres, late in the evening.  The kids needed to get some energy out, so Gary took them on a hike/run to the far corner of the property while I cooked dinner and got the rooms set up.  

Since it was dark when we arrived, we didn't get to appreciate the views from our campground until the next morning.  



Our host's neighbors gave us a sweet welcome to New Mexico.







And yes... Highland Cows are really that adorable!

Our host's property was full of unique desert life, with bugs, spiders, and thorny plants. 



We originally came to Deming to check out City of Rocks State Park.  But instead, we decided to try our luck at Rockhound State Park.  Our goal was to find the elusive Thunder Egg.  Alas, we did not find any...

BUT.... 

We found some awesome grasshoppers. I mean, wow! I had never imagined that they could be considered beautiful. We sure enjoyed catching them!







We enjoyed a beautiful hike with creepies, crawlies, cactus and carcasses.  What more could you ask for in a desert hike!

In case you can't tell from the above pictures, some kind of arachnid/insect creates a web home hanging suspended in the middle of this cactus. Kind of hard to see in the pic, but really cool in real life




Our desert dreams again were met that evening with some dry lightning. Videos linked below:

We left in the morning to a beautiful rainbow.

34th Stop - Flaming Gorge (UT)

Blog Post #45 - Written December 7, 2025 Stay: July 28 - August 1, 2025 Almost a year before our trip, I planned a Butler Siblings Family Reunion camping trip to Flaming Gorge. Starting in 2020, my brothers have planned a backpacking trip each summer to get away from the busy hubbub and reconnect with each other and with Mother Nature. A few of us weren't able to make it last year, and I knew my sisters and some of our wives and kids felt left out, so we planned a family campout for 2025. Unfortunately, my parents couldn't make it because they're serving a church mission in Tempe, AZ.  This was our only fixed/set plan that we had to schedule the rest of our RV trip around, which influenced our route and speed. But we made it! Which was a miracle, because the road into Flaming Gorge from Rawlins is treacherous with a trailer. It was very up-and-down and pretty windy and steep in many places. 20th Stop - Grand Rapids (MI)

Blog Post #27 - Written July 26, 2025 Stay: June 17-19, 2025 On our way up to Grand Rapids, we stopped in Kalamazoo to visit the the Air Zoo (free with ASTC pass). They have a bunch of little aerospace themed carnival rides that the kids loved, flight simulators, science demonstrations, plane restorations, and tons of planes and helicopters to see and climb in.  My favorites were the small 1 or 2 seater planes that people had built themselves. They had so many and they were so cool, and the stories of the men and women that built and flew them were amazing. It inspired me and so I of course had to add "Build and fly my own plane" to my list of life goals . . . they only cost like $50,000! And 1,000 hours of fun to put it together haha :) They are also home to (according to some sources) the world's largest indoor hand-painted mural! That was pretty amazing to see as well.
