63rd Stop - Roswell, NM
Blog Post #74 - Written June 9, 2026
Stay: October 25-27, 2025
So, as life tends to be on the road, our travel plans once again changed. While we were in the Guadalupe Mountains, another camper let us know that the Carlsbad Caverns were officially closed due to the government shutdown. We were definitely frustrated, since they were one of the main reasons for coming this far south into New Mexico and Texas. So, back to the planning board we went.
Since there wasn't too much on the western side of the state, and the White Sands National Park was also closed, we opted for the east side of the state. And what should lie there but the supernatural town of Roswell.
We pulled into Trailer Village RV Park just in time for their Trunk or Treat Halloween activity. We decorated our truck with some decorations that Aunt Ash had brought out for us in Joshua Tree (thanks Ash!) and were glad that we had picked up some Halloween costumes in Arizona. The kids got to go around to all the campers and go trick or treating.
We found out that there was a free little zoo down the road from our campground. By little, I mean little. It featured native animals to New Mexico, like owls, turkeys, cows, and even a badger! And, of course, more fun bugs (not in captivity).
We enjoyed lunch at the cute little Space Ship themed park, then headed off to The UFO Museum.
We really debated whether or not it would be worth it to go to the UFO Museum. (It was me. I was wishy washy and not super interested). Luckily Gary convinced me we should go, because it was actually really interesting! Maybe not the most intriguing museum for littles, but full of documented cases of UFO sightings, abduction reports, crop circles, and government cover-ups. Some of the exhibits were... interesting... to say the least haha!
The kids loved the alien abduction exhibit.
I think my favorite part was the guest lecturer. He talked about how symbols in ancient petroglyphs followed the creation story. He then gave examples of how the ancient people recorded their own 'alien encounters'. Some of these examples were up in northern New Mexico (more on that in our next post.) I think we sat in for the full 2 hour lecture.
Gary was feeling sick and tired, so he enjoyed some quiet time in a wheelchair rolling around reading all of the exhibits while I took the kids out to have some lunch.
We joined Gary again in the museum to check out their research library. This is full of textbooks, novels, and non-fiction of alien experiences. Oh, and files. So many files of alien reports! The kids enjoyed reading the comics.
And that was pretty much it for our time in Roswell. We did not get abducted (that we know of) and it was a interesting experience to see how rooted in the supernatural this little town is. Gives it some fun character :)
